Broker Not Paying? What to Do Step by Step
Late payment is one of the biggest cash problems for small carriers. This guide is a practical checklist, not legal advice.
1. Check the terms
Open the rate confirmation and your invoice. Confirm the payment terms, the date you delivered and the date the invoice was sent and received.
2. Make sure the paperwork is complete
Many delays come from a missing signed bill of lading or a missing proof of delivery. Send what is missing first.
3. Follow up in writing
Email the broker's accounts payable contact with the load number, invoice number, amount and due date, and ask for a payment date. Keep every message.
4. Escalate calmly
If you get no answer, ask for a manager and set a deadline in writing. Stay factual.
5. Know your options
Depending on the situation, drivers consider a bond claim against the broker's surety, a collections agency, a small claims filing or a lawyer. Ask a qualified professional what fits your case.
Prevent it next time
Check the broker before you haul with a tool such as Load Guard, and track invoices so overdue ones stand out.
